Biotite K-Ar dates for rocks from throughout the Bighorn Mountains are systematically related to rock unit and degree of alteration of the biotite. Fresh biotite from granitic rocks in the northern half of the range averages 2.75 (σ = 0.05) by, biotite from gneiss, which forms the southern half of the range, averages 2.50 (σ = 0.07) by, regardless of degree of alteration, and chloritized biotite from the northern granites averages 2.53 (σ = 0.08) by. K-Ar systematics in Precambrian rocks may be obscured by uncritical grouping of samples and between-lab and within-lab variances that are greater than the best precision attainable in a single laboratory.
