The large and highly variable enhancement of the 3He/4He abundance ratio over the solar wind value ( ~ 4*E-4) in impulsive solar energetic particle (SEP) events is a well established but, as yet, poorly understood phenomenon. Recent measurements from the ULEIS and SIS instruments on the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) spacecraft have shown that: 1) the 3He/4He ratio can be significantly enhanced even in large, gradual SEP events; 2) significant fluxes of 3He are often present in interplanetary space, even during periods of low solar activity; and 3) SEP emission with significantly enhanced 3He/4He can often have long durations (up to a few days) more commonly associated with gradual events. To better understand the origin of energetic 3He in the inner heliosphere, we have investigated the energy spectra of this isotope under a variety of conditions including quiet times, short and long duration 3He-rich events, and large, gradual events. We compare these spectra and discuss their contributions to the longer-term fluences of 3He, and also their variation during the rise from minimum to maximum of the present solar cycle.
