The ground interference pattern of Hines and Rao (1968) is reanalyzed with the method of Briggs and Spencer (1955) using three sets of time delays and, for comparison purposes, with two methods of similar-fades analysis. Experimental results confirm that both the correlation method and the similar-fades (average delay) method are reliable for determining drift velocities, at least in the lower D- and E-region, from interference fading records. However, the similar-fades method is unreliable as it derives drift speeds which tend to be too high. It is concluded that the derived drift velocities appear to be that of the neutral gas and that the correlation method is suitable for ionospheric drift analysis even when fading is due to interference.
