The moment equations for one-dimensional motion and radiative transfer in a special relativistic fluid are developed in Lagrangian form in a manner similar to Lindquist. Characteristic analysis shows this set of equations to be hyperbolic, with characteristic slopes consistent with special relativity. In contrast, the time-dependent diffusion approximation is shown to yield mixed real and imaginary characteristics. This casts severe doubt on the applicability of diffusion theory to time-dependent, relativistic situations. The moment equations would appear to be the proper relativistic generalization of the classical diffusion approximation to radiative transfer.
