The Plasma Depletion Layer (PDL) is a layer sunward of the magnetopause with lower plasma density and higher magnetic field compared to the upstream magnetosheath plasma. It occurs primarily during periods of northward IMF with low shear across the magnetopause. Some observations have been made of this structure and various theoretical models have been proposed for its formation. Because of the limitations of observational and theoretical studies of the PDL, global simulations have been used extensively to study the PDL. In an earlier study, we have shown that the MHD description is sufficient to describe the PDL process for the Jan. 12, 1996 event. In this study, we test the Jan. 1, 1999 PDL event to further confirm this conclusion. Model results are compared with PDL observations and the general agreement between the model and observations validates the use of the global MHD model to study the PDL. However, differences exist and we discuss the possible reasons for the differences and the possible ways to overcome these difficulties.
