The present approaches of retrievals of aerosol parameters from SCIAMACHY top-of-atmosphere (TOA) reflectance within the nadir mode suffers from the present status of the absolute radiance (processor version 4.02b) calibration, giving a significant underestimation of the TOA reflectance. Thus the aerosol optical thickness (AOT) and the absorbing aerosol index (AAI), derived directly from L1B data gives physically unrealistic results and no regular product from SCIAMAYHY for validation is currently available. Attempts for scientific products are undertaken using correction factors for the TOA reflectance by University of Bremen and KNMI. Comparisons, made with different instruments (MERIS), enables the determination of correction factors for the TOA reflectance for selected bands. Tests for the application of such correction factors brings the AOT and AAI into the right physical magnitude, showing, that principally a determination of aerosol parameters from SCIAMACHY TOA reflectance with SCIAMACHY observations can be made. This task requires an urgent improvement of the radiometric key data for the calibration of SCIAMACHY L1b data.
