Basic physical and mathematical concepts are presented for using magnetic-field measurements from the four-satellite Cluster array as a wave telescope. The mathematical formalism developed on the basis of a general linear filter formulation makes it possible to use observations from the four satellites to distinguish not only wave frequencies but also wave modes and propagation directions. The potential of the technique is illustrated by a simple example, in which forward and backward propagating waves are separated.
