INPE - the Brazilian National Space Research Institute - carries out research in the upper atmosphere and ionosphere at a number of low latitude locations including Sao Jose dos Campos (23 deg S, 46 deg W), Cachoeira Paulista (23 deg S, 45 deg W), Fortaleza (4 deg S, 38 deg W) and Alcantara (2 deg S, 44 deg W). This brief review, which is mainly concerned with work related to the chemistry and dynamics of the neutral mesosphere and lower thermosphere, describes INPE's facilities for research in these areas, and presents some recent results.
