Recently, we have demonstrated the displacement of Luminous Infrared Galaxies on the K-band Fundamental Plane (FP) is due to the presence of bright Red Supergiants or Asymptotic Giant Branch stars. These stars reside in a central disk which reduces the observed CO (1.6 and 2.3 micron) velocity dispersions (σ) by 30-50%. This causes LIRG mass measurements to be underestimated by ~ 10×. While σs from the Calcium II Triplet absorption lines (0.85 micron) show LIRGs are indistinguishable from massive elliptical galaxies on the I-band FP. At I-band dust enshrouds the young stars, keeping them from affecting CaT measurements. We will, for the first time, spatially map the STELLAR kinematics of the young stellar disk on scales of tens of parsecs in the advanced LIRG Arp 193 using the Near Infrared Integral Field Spectrometer (NIFS) on Gemini-N in conjunction with Laser Guidestar Adaptive Optics. We will compare these observations with simulations that combine new radiative transfer algorithms with N-body/SPH codes to model dust, gas, stars and AGN/supernovae feedback in merging galaxies in order to study how gas dissipation and young stellar disks are linked with the formation of super-massive black holes.
