The geographic, geomagnetic, and geopotential reference frames and transformations for plasma convection in the ionosphere are described. The convection electric field model of Spiro et al. (1978) is utilized to calculate convection paths and plasma velocities, and to study the universal time (UT) effects in the magnetic frame. A diurnal variation of the corotation electric field which affects convection velocities in the transplasmapause region is observed in the magnetic field frame. The influences of UT variation on plasma densities at transplasmapause latitudes are examined.
