A theoretical analysis is presented to demonstrate that a magnetized inhomogeneous partially ionized gas is subject to an interchange instability. The instability is driven by the neutral gas dynamics and depends critically on the charged particle-neutral collisions. The free energy source for the instability is the cross-field current. Potential applications of the instability include laboratory MHD devices (e.g., electromagnetic launchers and MHD generators), space plasmas (e.g., the ionosphere of Venus and the solar photosphere), and chemical releases in the ionosphere and magnetosphere.
