The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) thermospheric general circulation model for Venus (VTGCM) is producing results that are comparable to recently obtained Venus Express data. The VTGCM is a three dimensional model that can calculate temperatures, zonal winds, meridional winds, vertical winds, and concentration of specific species. The VTGCM can also compute the O2-IR, NO-UV, and OH-IR night airglow intensity distributions. The altitude range has been extended to cover 80 km to 200 km on the nightside. Sensitivity tests with the eddy diffusion coefficient and the wave drag term have been completed. Model results show possible controlling processes of the night airglow layers and the nightside hot spot. With the expansion of the altitude grid and the range of sensitivity tests, the VTGCM is able to show a consistent set of results. Model implications for the night airglow and night hot spot can give more insight and understanding for the changing circulation of Venus’ upper atmosphere.
