Boiling is encountered in many engineering fields and, recently, in space applications. Many coupled mechanisms of heat and mass transfer in the boiling process need to be well understood. The objectives of this MAP project focus on a better understanding of the phenomena involved in the boiling process by using a multi-scale approach. The project combines pool and convective boiling configurations. For tackling this problem, theoretical and experimental tools are used in a complementary way. This project is designed in three parts. The first is devoted to the fundamental aspects of pool boiling, where single and multiple bubbles are investigated in different gravity and electric field conditions. The second part deals with flow boiling analysis. New data will be provided for fundamental studies and practical applications. The third involves an integrated experiment where the new tools, under development, will be implemented. From the fundamental point of view, this experiment will be a useful tool for analysing the phenomena. Boiling is important from both scientific and application points of view. Academic institutions and industry are involved; this collaboration, now at an initial stage, will be increased in the near future by looking at the needs of industrial applications.
