The current unusual sunspot minimum provides an excellent opportunity to improve our understanding of the transport and acceleration of cosmic rays in the heliosphere. We will have detailed observations as a function of time and position, in a range of physical parameter space not previously accessible. Important questions such as the nature of the transport normal to the average magnetic field and how charged particles are accelerated and the effects of the large-scale structure of the heliosphere are still being hotly debated. I will briefly review our present basic understanding of cosmic-ray transport and acceleration and outline how the observations might be used to shed light on these questions.
