Herbig-Haro Objects: Uv Spectra, Herbig-Haro Objects: Emission Lines
Scientific paper
The fact that Herbig-Haro (HH) nebulae can be detected in the ultraviolet by IUE is one of the many surprising characteristics of these historically enigmatic objects. As in the optical, there are primarily two spectroscopic "classes" of HH objects, those with high excitation atomic emission lines and those with only low excitation emission, such as the UV molecular hydrogen lines. Initially, the unexpectedly high excitation of the short-wavelength emission lines was not consistent with the plane parallel shock models which sufficiently described the optical spectra. This contradiction lead to a re-evaluation of the applied reddening corrections and examination of bow shock models. Furthermore, the UV continuum has been interpreted as collisionally enhanced H I two-photon emission, possibly combined with fluorescent H2 continuum. The spatial distribution of both the UV line and continuum emission has also been studied and compared with the optical distribution.
