A design of a 45 cm telescope is presented, which will be flown on a stratospheric balloon to study Southern Hemisphere stars in ultraviolet radiation. A Cassegrain and a Newtonian system are considered. The Cassegrain system consists of two parabolic mirrors and the Newtonian system is made of a parabolic mirror (primary) and a plane (secondary). Using the ray tracing method, the spot diagrams are constructed for both systems and the incident rays are considered along and away from the optical axis. The results of the analysis indicate that both systems considered present a good angular resolution. However, for the purpose of construction of the telescope, the aberration produced in the Newtonian system alone were calculated.
