Many supergiants show absorption features in the ultraviolet region. Indices based on the flux in a narrow band of about 40 A and a broad band of about 80 A centered on these absorption features are defined and their relation with the intrinsic color is studied. It is also shown that the likely ion which affects the absorption features at 1400 A and 1550 A in emission line giants is Si II.
