An overview is presented of the NASA Mars Observer space vehicle, designed to act as a bridge between initial Mars exploration and preparations for human exploration of the planet envisioned for the 21st century. Mars will be observed by the Observer over an entire Martian year to produce a collection of synergistic data to address multiple questions about the atmosphere, surface and interior of the planet. The information obtained will permit the first long-term observation of meteorological and geological processes and their interaction on a planet other than earth.
