The lifetime of the 22S12 state of the hydrogenlike atom Ar XVIII has been measured by direct observation of spontaneous two-photon decay in a beam-foil time-of-flight experiment. Identification of the two-photon mode was made using photon counting techniques to observe the single-photon continuum, and the peak resulting from summing the energies of photon pairs detected in coincidence. The measured lifetime, τ(22s12)=3.54(25)×10-9 sec (95% confidence) is in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions based on a nonrelativistic calculation.
