The solar magnetic field (SMF) is extended to the whole interplanetary space and combined with the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) to yield a three-dimensional picture of the magnetic structure of the interplanetary space. The amplifying effect of the IMF is derived from solar corona streamer observations. The three-dimensional structure of the interplanetary space is derived from 27-day recurrence patterns of the interplanetary magnetic field polarity obtained by direct observation with satellites for 1962-1969 and by direct analysis of the earth's polar magnetic field data for 1970-1974, and from daily IMF sector polarities from the year 1926 on, inferred from the diurnal magnetic field variation in the earth's polar cap. It is shown that the interplanetary space is divided into two hemispheres, the toward- and the away-hemisphere, irrespective of the solar cycle phase. The neutral sheet boundary exhibits a certain degree of folding, restricted mostly in the heliographic latitude range from -7.5 to 7.5 degrees.
