Detailed analysis of electrostatic solitary waves (ESW) in the plasma sheet boundary layer shows that some ESW have a distinct two-dimensional structure rather than solely the one-dimensional potentials as reported previously. We present a statistical analysis of ESW waveforms, and show the spatial distribution of the 1D and 2D ESW in the magnetotail. We assume the 2D ESW represent the early phase of the nonlinear evolution of electron beam instabilities. The statistical analysis suggests possible locations of the ESW source regions where electrons are accelerated to cause a bump-on-tail instability. There seem to be two different acceleration regions corresponding to the near-Earth neutral line and the distant neutral line.
