A scheme for the development of two types of magnetospheric disturbances is presented. At large values of the transverse conductivity of the nighttime auroral ionosphere Sigma, the magnetosphere behaves as a controlled system with the generation of disturbances that are a direct response to external effects and that are associated with a 'transient' transfer of energy to the ionosphere. At low values of Sigma, the magnetosphere operates like a system that accumulates and releases energy; in this case, intenser disturbances with a large time delay are generated. The key here may be the northward turning of the IMF and a sharp reduction of the solar wind velocity as well as an increase in Sigma due to solar wave radiation or artificially produced excitations.
