An investigation is made of the change in frequency of drought episodes in southern Switzerland. Episodes of drought are shown to have increased in frequency and persistence during the 20th century. They have been particularly frequent and long during the 1940s as well as since 1981. As these two periods have also been particularly warm, the results are discussed in relation to the increase in global atmospheric temperatures observed this century.
