Four methods which originated in the field of nonlinear optics are considered. The parametric oscillator is a special case of a resonant down-conversion. The spin-flip Raman laser is a laser oscillator in which the amplification of light is achieved by stimulated Raman scattering from mobile electrons in a semiconductor. The polariton laser is also based on stimulated Raman scattering. However, in this case the incident pump radiation is scattered from a polariton in a dielectric crystal. The fourth method for producing tunable coherent IR radiation is difference frequency mixing in a crystal with a nonlinear dielectric susceptibility.
