The development of molecular gas lasers based on stimulated Raman scattering and tunable in the FIR is discussed in a general survey of recent experiments. The physical principles involved and the limitations they may impose are reviewed; the early attempts to achieve FIR tunability with complex optical systems, ruby and dye laser pumps, and HCl and HF media are described; two recent devices using CO2-laser-pumped methyl fluoride are characterized; and the prospects for further development are explored. Output pulses of energy 0.1-1.0 mJ and instantaneous power 1-10 kW have been achieved over the wavelength range 250-300 microns.
