The problem of obtaining negative coefficients when calculating true height from ionograms is studied. It is suggested that the least-squares fit method should be applied with the following restraints: (1) the program should be modified to demand that only that solution should be sought which will have only positive coefficients, and (2) no term on the right-hand side should exceed the observed value of h prime. Finally, it is noted that even with these restraints there is no guarantee that the positive values so obtained will reflect all the retardation effects in the correct proportions. However, these results will be more reliable than those obtained by allowing large negative coefficients.
