The tropical nightglow emissions in the vicinity of the Brazilian magnetic anomaly are studied using data collected by two balloons which were flown in February 1973 and 1977. Both observations were conducted during comparable solar and magnetic activities, but the magnetic activity preceeding the flights was larger in 1973 than in 1977. The behavior in the tropical nightglow of the 630 and 557.7 nm lines is determined and compared with predictions based on recent ionospheric models. The possible effects of the magnetic activity on the F-2 layer in the tropics are examined, and it is shown that the current ionospheric models are not in agreement with these observations.
