The present state of knowledge regarding the processes of the upper middle atmosphere above 50 km is reviewed. Special attention is given to some outstanding issues, such as variation of electron density and ion composition of the lower ionosphere, in relation to the problem of excess 03 loss and the need for a study of variations of the composition and transport in the middle atmosphere which has encouraged scientists to participate in a global middle atmospheric research program. It is concluded that a better knowledge of solar radiation below 200 nm and of NO concentration in the mesosphere are required to obtain better atmospheric models.
