A semi-classical approximation using the potential energy curves of 4 states of the positive ion CH is used to calculate the excitation cross section of the fine structure transition of thermal carbon ion-hydrogen atom collisions in interstellar clouds. The exchange interaction and the trajectory effects induced by the long range polarization potential are taken into account. The cooling function of the collisions is computed as a function of the kinetic temperature of the medium.
