THE possibility of obtaining the absorption spectrum of atomic species
in the liquid phase was first pointed out by Tyson and West using the
electrolysis of various metal ions1. We provide here new
evidence of the existence of mercury atoms in aqueous solution using
chemically reducing mercury ion followed by spectroscopic observations.
