The physics and astronomy program at Chicago State University (CSU) has adopted an instructional environment that embraces inquiry-based instruction, research on student learning, and instructional revision. Building upon successes in our introductory physics courses, we have expanded our efforts to include the introductory general education astronomy course at CSU. Working with the Education and Public Outreach group at Sonoma State University, we have developed and implemented several new inquiry-based lab activities that build upon more traditional verification labs. We have also implemented research-based materials such as Lecture Tutorials and Mastering Astronomy in the revised course. Student researchers have created open-ended assessment questions for each of the lab activities and have aided in course instruction. We describe our implementation, as well as the successes and challenges we face.
