About 170 students attend ASTR 101 each semester in Joliet Junior College. In Spring 08, students did two group projects related to telescopes. The telescope theme was chosen to highlight that 2008 marks the 400th anniversary of the invention of the telescope. Students were surveyed to find out their reactions to the projects.
Preliminary results indicate that students found the projects educationally worthwhile, and that they were more confident when doing the second project because their first project had provided them with the necessary skills to do successful projects. A majority of students report that their interest in astronomy increased as a result of these projects. Details of the projects and student reactions will be presented at the meeting.
