The cosmic ray penumbra structure is examined by means of a method which yields analytical insight equivalent to that of the Lemaitre and Vallarta (1936) while employing the speed, efficiency and geomagnetic field modeling capabilities of the modern computer. The method assigns two parameters to trajectory features, allowing the structure and properties of the penumbra to be systematically related to a trajectory configuration by means of an automated set of computer procedures. Use of the method has led to the discovery of isolated, forbidden penumbral islands.
