Active tectonic processes along the African-Eurasian collision zone are associated withcatastrophic events including earthquakes, major volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis.Understanding how these processes canaffect the eastern Mediterranean is of increasingscientific and public interest. The regionincludes a frequently crossed internationalsea traffic corridor and dense populationcenters. Furthermore, most of the small volcanicislands in the Aegean are major touristattractions that contribute significantly tothe wealth of this region.
