New geochemical data are presented for postmid-Miocene lavas from the Tibetan plateau which indicate their lithospheric mantle origin. Thermal considerations show that a thinning of the lithospheric mantle is associated with the generation of such magmas; volcanism is therefore coincident with uplift, furnishing a climate-independent means of dating the onset of uplift. Ar-40/Ar-39 dating places the volcanism and associated uplift at 13 million years ago.
