The time-dependent behaviour of the degree of excitation non-equilibrium in the low lying 6 3P1 resonance level of mercury at the arc core during half a period of a 50-Hz ac mercury arc plasma has been experimentally determined. The population density of this levels is less than the calculated one assuming equilibrium conditions and it exhibits a modulation out of phase with that of the high lying 6 3D2 level and in phase with the electron temperature.
