Grande Pile and Les Echets represent two long and continual lake records covering the last 140,000 years. Both these cores constitute European paleoclimatic reference sites with the most complete and detailed palynological cover in entire Europe. Both sequences have been cored and analyzed for paleomagnetism. A total of 12 paleomagnetic directional anomalies are recorded in the two cores. Most of these anomalies occur in both cores and at exactly the same chronostratigraphic levels. This cannot be a mere chance but must - in one way or the other - represent a physical reality.
