An analysis is made of changes in the magnetic current and force line distortions in the magnetosphere associated with the three-dimensional Birkeland current loop in which the longitudinal currents propagate along the force lines of the real magnetic field and equatorial reconnection occurs at a distance of 15 earth radii. The changes corresponding to various current intensities in the loop and various longitudinal dimensions of the loop estimated. It is shown that the formation of the loop leads to an increase in the thickness of the plasma layer at a distance of 15 earth radii in the loop sector, to the formation of a structure of the auroral projection type in the ionosphere, and to significant shifting of the ionospheric projections of points with a fixed position in the plasma layer.
