The United Kingdom's infrared telescope has f/q Cassegrain and f/20 coude focal planes and the additional option of an f/35 Cassegrain chopping secondary mirror. The optical system including contributions from the secondary mirror, the respective support systems, and atmospheric viewing gives a Cassegrain image of diameter 1 arcsec (90% incident radiation) and a coude image of diameter 1.25 arcsec. A thin mirror approach is used both for primary and secondary mirrors. The lightweight design concept can be applied to altazimuth as well as equatorial designs and to optical as well as to infrared ground based telescopes. It can be used in conjunction with the segmented or multiple mirror approach.
