By introducing the weighting function, we developed a method to calculate the influence of thermal noise on the period measurement in a torsion pendulum. According to the nonlinear least-squares fitting method and the correlation method, we calculated the weighting function and obtained a rigorous formula of thermal noise limit for the period measurement, where the uncertainty of the period is proportional to 1/(mQ)1/2 with Q the quality factor and m the number of the period during the whole measurement time. The result is significant for the precision determination of the Newtonian gravitational constant using the time-of-swing method.
