The thermal design adopted for the Giotto spacecraft to overcome the problems of varying solar flux, a large range of solar aspect angles, and differing internal power dissipation is described. Thermal control is based on an internal enclosure housing all equipment and payloads, isolated from space and from the kick motor. Dust shields are decoupled radiatively and conductively from the spacecraft main body. The main radiator is an annular honeycomb panel under the high gain antenna at the top of the spacecraft. Skirt radiators are distributed around the outer panels between the main and the experiment platform. Inside the enclosure, the highly dissipating TWT's and reaction control equipment are isolated.
