Transient magnetic anomalies accompanying seismic stresses are more elusive than had been anticipated. We have, therefore, undertaken a more rigorous calculation than hitherto of the piezomagnetic effect accompanying representative seismic strain fields. We present a numerical method of treating faults of arbitrary area and orientation with fault displacement graded to zero at the fault boundaries to avoid stress discontinuities. The effect of grading the displacement in a realistic way is to give a more restricted and generally smaller piezomagnetic anomaly field than is indicated by simpler models. Seismomagnetism remains important in the search for earthquake prediction methods, but is more difficult to observe than had been hoped.
