The paper develops a theory for determining the effect of gravity waves upon chemical reactions in the atmosphere. The theory is applied to the O2(1-Sigma) airglow measurements obtained by Noxon (1978), and it is shown that fluctuations of O2(1-Sigma) airglow can be used to study gravity waves and enhanced diffusion in the vicinity of the atomic oxygen layer. It is found that the temperature dependence of the reaction rate constant for O2(1-Sigma) and the shape of the atomic oxygen layer both greatly influence the fluctuations of O2(1-Sigma) airglow. The ratio of brightness fluctuations to temperature fluctuations is calculated theoretically for OH.
