The relationship between gamma ray index, Igr and shale content, Vsh, in shaly sands is a quantitative indication for shale content. It is used in well logging for oil and gas. It was shown, empirically, that the Igr - Vsh relationship is nonlinear. A specified model for an explanation of the nonlinear relationship between Igr and Vsh is offered. The model is not complicated. It cannot cover all possible cases but it is a startpoint model for more sophisticated theories.
