A brief history of the theoretical seismogram is given. Correspondence patterns, “fundamental mode — surface wave” and “higher mode — body waves” are proved. The method of calculating theoretical seismograms is explained and the examples calculated are given. The importance of group velocity curve as a function of the period in the interpretation of theoretical seismograms is emphasized. Applications and prospects are briefly described.
