The momentum deposition flux and the vertical diffusion caused by saturated gravity waves are shown to be related by a simple expression which incorporates as its terms the vertical diffusion coefficient, the gravity wave vertical wavenumber, the ratio of zonal to horizontal wave numbers, and a generalized friction coefficient which varies in similarity to Rayleigh friction in a way that depends on wave parameters and wind. This coefficient is not sensitive to wave incoherency, since it depends on the square of the gravity wave vertical wavenumber, while the momentum deposition flux is sensitive to such incoherency because it is an odd function of the difference between the mean wind and the wave horizontal phase speed. A mesospheric model for the generalized friction coefficient is proposed on the basis of a vertical diffusion coefficient model derived by Ebel (1980). When the friction and the vertical diffusion coefficients are large, gravity wave-caused heat transport is sufficiently large to require an accounting.
