Proceeding from the balance equation of charge carriers per unit volume of the upper ionosphere, a model is developed of the formation, recombination, and transport of the carriers. The model is applied to the derivation of a partial differential equation for the charge carrier density and motion. The results of a numerical solution of the equation are analyzed as a function of the initial parameters, and are compared with measurements of the integral electron content and other parameters that depend on the integral electron content.
