The auroral spiral, occurring in some auroral arcs, is a prominent vortex structure in the optical data. Although ample ground-based observational descriptions of auroral spirals exist, their magnetospheric counterparts are far less investigated. Thus, many questions remain regarding the generation mechanism of auroral spirals. Here we present simultaneous observations of auroral spirals and their regions of generation in the near-Earth plasma sheet using THEMIS’s spacecraft and its ground network of all-sky imagers and magnetometers.
