OMEGA-VIMS (Observatoire pour la Mineralogie, l'Eau, les Glaces et l'Activite - Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer) is an infrared spectrometer selected for the Soviet mission Mars 94. The instrumentation is designed to support remote sensing of planetary surfaces by an infrared multispectral imager. It provides recognition of planetary bodies in the spectral range 0.30 to 1.05 microns. The main purpose of a visible channel for OMEGA-VIMS is to extend the mapping capability towards short wavelengths and to help the identification on the surface of features mapped in the infrared range. One of the purposes of this work is to explore the possibility of including the present design of the visible channel on missions, in terms of scientific return and technical feasibility. The optical, mechanical, electronical designs, together with considerations on interfacing problems, are presented.
