The Virtual Radiation Belt Observatory (ViRBO) is part of the new VxO infrastructure being developed to support Heliophysics research. Though focused specifically on the data and physics of the Earth's radiation belts its development has revealed patterns for scientific data sharing that are relevant across the VxO domain. We will present a discussion on the use of metadata (catalog and inventory), data access and ingestion, data (web) services, integration of real-time and archived data sets, and the importance of data quality control. Our discussion will present these results in terms of generalized "patterns" which are relevant across the scientific data arena. Specifically we will mention how these patterns apply to other scientific data systems such as the Comprehensive Large Array Stewardship System (CLASS), EOS ClearingHOuse (ECHO) and Space Physics Interactive Data Resource (SPIDR).
